Garth trained in medicine at the University of Otago, initially in Dunedin and subsequently in Christchurch clinical school. After graduating in 1995 he travelled and trained in a variety of hospitals to gain a broad experience from numerous mentors in Paediatric Medicine, Neonatology and Developmental Paediatrics. Specialist training occurred in Hawkes Bay, Christchurch, Nelson, Glasgow - Scotland, London - England, and finally in Auckland. Gaining a full Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2007 he returned to take up practice as a Consultant Paediatrician in Nelson. He has regularly worked  in Wellington, and Hutt Valley in Developmental Paediatrics and in a specialised clinic for ADHD and Autism (for both children and adults). He periodically works in Australia, and maintains medical registration there.

Since qualifying as a specialist, further training has been undertaken in Developmental Paediatrics, Clinical Hypnosis and Allergy. Garth regularly attends courses and conferences locally and internationally to make sure that he is practicing up to date medicine, and to keep abreast of this rapidly changing field of medicine. He recently extended a long held interest in Allergy by completing a two year Post Graduate Certificate in Allergic Disease, through the University of Western Sydney, with clinical training at the Westmead Childrens Hospital, in Sydney. He has also been a Council Member for the Paediatric Society of NZ between 2009 and 2015, and is a Clinical Senior Lecturer for the University of Otago Medical School and an Honorary Research Associate for the School of Biological Sciences at Victoria University. He has a research interest in ADHD.
